Type of Swimming Pool Filtration

I get terrible allergy/asthma attacks after swimming, especially after several days in a row. My allergist says the chlorine ‘aggravates’ my allergies, although it doesn’t cause them. I have heard of saline chlorination and bromine, but am not sure what really works to alleviate the chlorine effect.

You can go with a product called Baquacil. It totally replaces all chlorine products in the pool. It’s more expensive but less harsh on your skin and you feel great when you get out of the pool. The problem with things like salt water pools is that the salt gets turned into chlorine from the generator so your still swimming in chlorine. Go to your local pool store and see if they carry the Baquacil. I hope this helps.

    One without chlorine?

  • Allergy General:

Swimming pool water with excess chlorine can be a cause of Eczema i.e. dryness of skin.

You can install a water ionizer if you want the pool to be mostly chlorine free. These solutions can be expensive but if your family members are very sensitive to chlorine then it is worth the consideration.

There is another system called ozonizer which help kill bacterias. However, Ozone is know to aggravate Asthma attacks so make sure that these ozonizers don’t affect the person with allergies.

There is a delicate balance regarding whether to use or not to use chlorine in the pool. If you don’t use the ionizer and if your pool is going to have temperatures above 90 degree then you might have to use small amount of chlorine to kill the bacteria and algae that can grow at that temperature.

Good luck and have fun swimming.

  • If your pool is indoors or covered you can use Bromine but it is not recommended for outdoor pools. And you dont have to do anything to switch. You can just start adding bromine tabs to your feeder. If you switch and you want to switch back to chlorine later then you would have to drain the pool if you wanted to get rid of all the Bromine. Bromine will not leave the water like chlorine does and once it is added it is always present in the water. In certain applications it is a good alternative to chlorine.
