Swimming Pools Free and Total Chlorine

Liquid Chlorine in flask for analysis.

Looking online I’ve seen so much confusing and contradictory information regarding pools and their chlorine levels that I find myself here asking a somewhat common question. I apologize.

Background: My friends got a new house with a pool and we decided to try using the solar cover last week in order to prolong the time we could use the pool. We live in Arizona and there are still some warm days to come. Last night I walked outside and noticed a funny smell. It wasn’t the typically complained about “chlorine smell.” It smelled a bit like a wet dog; enough so that I was afraid to put my hand in the pool wondering what must have fallen in and died. A bit later it occurred to me that more than smelling like wet dog it smelled like a lake. I was alarmed immediately by that, thinking maybe there wasn’t enough chlorine to kill off algae, so I rushed to test it (using AquaCheck 5 strips). The results were quite a bit different than I expected.

Total Chlorine: 10ppm
Free Chlorine: 10ppm
Alkalinity: 100ppm
pH: 7.5ppm
Total Hardness: 500

Sadly, (a week or so) prior to putting the solar cover on, one of my friends had added quite a bit of stabilizer and chlorine. Having read about damage that can be caused to solar pool covers when exposed to high chlorine levels I removed the cover as soon as we noticed the problem. I’ve taken the chlorine out, added quite a bit of water and had the pool uncovered all day today with the filtration system on. The numbers I listed above are what the pool reads right now, though aside from the chlorine levels everything has dropped a bit in the last 24 hours.

I hate having the pool cover off, the temperature dropped very quickly. Looking around tonight I’ve seen everything from the typical warnings -not to swim until the chlorine levels are at 1.5-3ppm- to people saying as long as the total chlorine and free chlorine are in balance it’s safe to swim. Ours appear to be in balance, but still seem startling high.

Why is my Polaris 360 pool cleaner floating on the top of the water?

I changed the wheels/belts just a two days ago. When I put it in the water to test it out, everything worked fine (including the back end staying on the ground and turning around/climbing walls properly~ as these were issues before as well) but when I came out to check it the morning after, it was floating on top of the water with the tail spraying water straight up in the air! I’ve already changed the reverse valve and hoses too.

I’ve checked all of the troubleshooting manuals, searched for related topics and have just about driven myself insane trying to find the correct answer to this problem. Everything the troubleshooting manuals tell you to do… I’ve done, and then some. Could it be a problem with the main filtration system that is causing this? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
